FutureA+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the 49ers to a D+. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The 49ers spent pick No. 137 on Bryce Foster, a name the board had a full 37 spots lower.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Ponds pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher still on the board. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The Mateer value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick13
Rnd1
Jeremiyah Love
In the 13th overall pick they get an every-down engine for the run game at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick24
Rnd1
Anthony Hill Jr.
In the Round 1 slot they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick26
Rnd1
Jermod McCoy
In the 26th pick they get an island corner, and a steal at that. More want than need.
Pick90
Rnd3
DeAndre Moore Jr.
They robbed the room for DeAndre Moore Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick92
Rnd3
Caleb Tiernan
A reasonable price with a little left over, Caleb Tiernan in slot 92. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick93
Rnd3
D'Angelo Ponds
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 93 on D'Angelo Ponds with edge rusher unsolved.
Pick134
Rnd4
Terry Moore
Terry Moore in the Round 4 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick137
Rnd4
Bryce Foster
Bryce Foster in the 137th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick165
Rnd5
John Mateer
John Mateer at the 165th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
Pick174
Rnd5
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III in pick 174 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick198
Rnd6
Bear Alexander
The board had cheaper options than Bear Alexander at Round 6, Pick 22, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick206
Rnd6
Jack Velling
They liked Jack Velling enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 206. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick241
Rnd7
London Humphreys
London Humphreys at pick No. 241 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
