FutureC
The Patriots fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B. Some picks age like wine; Frank Gore Jr. at pick 193 will need to, sitting 35 spots clear of his grade. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Harden value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Adding Jared Goff by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In pick No. 23 they get a weapon on the perimeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick29
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
Amarius Mims at the 29th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick34
Rnd2
Jordan Morgan
Jordan Morgan in the Round 2 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick68
Rnd3
Devontez Walker
Devontez Walker in slot 68 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick97
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice at the 97th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick103
Rnd4
Caelen Carson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Caelen Carson at pick 103. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick137
Rnd5
Chau Smith-Wade
A quiet steal in the Round 5 slot: Chau Smith-Wade for less than the market said. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick180
Rnd6
Ty'Ron Hopper
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ty'Ron Hopper. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick193
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. at pick 193 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick231
Rnd7
Myles Harden
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Myles Harden in Round 7, Pick 11, plain and simple. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
