Draft Grade — Patriots

FutureA
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Patriots a B-. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Tim Smith at pick 218 is 23 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick41
Rnd2
Benjamin Morrison
A cornerback of that caliber at No. 41 is the definition of value, full stop. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick50
Rnd2
Dylan Fairchild
A premium they did not need to pay, Dylan Fairchild a notch or two before his time. It fills a real need, too.
Pick72
Rnd3
Jonah Savaiinaea
Value with a capital V on Jonah Savaiinaea in slot 72, a genuine coup. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick81
Rnd3
Colston Loveland
Colston Loveland in Round 3, Pick 17 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick85
Rnd3
Nick Emmanwori
By-the-book stuff, Nick Emmanwori at pick No. 85 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick108
Rnd4
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell at the 108th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick144
Rnd5
Donovan Edwards
Donovan Edwards in pick 144 lands just on the right side of the ledger. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick216
Rnd7
Kyren Lacy
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kyren Lacy. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick218
Rnd7
Tim Smith
Tim Smith in Round 7, Pick 4 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick228
Rnd7
Stone Handy
Stone Handy in pick No. 228 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
