Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B+
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureB
The Patriots won the night they stopped Fitzgerald from sliding. Grade: B+.

The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Ryan Fitzgerald, the No. 117 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 7 slot like a gift left on the doorstep. A dependable weekend that grades out a B+.

They are betting Walker proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.

A whole weekend of picks and safety is somehow still a want. The Porter pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with safety and quarterback still on the board.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Jahdae Barron
In slot 12 they get a press-man option on the boundary. Need was not the driver here.
Pick38 Rnd2 JT Tuimoloau
A reach for JT Tuimoloau in pick No. 38; a little patience would have been rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick45 Rnd2 Tre Harris
Tre Harris at the 45th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick69 Rnd3 Deone Walker
No edge and no loss on Deone Walker in the 69th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick76 Rnd3 Harold Fannin Jr.
Harold Fannin Jr. in pick 76 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick77 Rnd3 David Walker
They reached into another round for David Walker, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick88 Rnd3 Darien Porter
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Darien Porter adds a cornerback and leaves safety and quarterback untouched.
Pick105 Rnd4 Jake Majors
They paid sticker price for Jake Majors in Round 4, Pick 4, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick150 Rnd5 Quinshon Judkins
Somehow Quinshon Judkins was still sitting there in pick No. 150, and they pounced on premier running back value. The roster fit checks out.
Pick172 Rnd5 Jay Higgins
Jay Higgins at the 172nd overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick219 Rnd7 Cody Simon
Cody Simon in Round 7, Pick 1 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick222 Rnd7 Xavier Truss
Xavier Truss in the 222nd pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick240 Rnd7 Ryan Fitzgerald
Ryan Fitzgerald at No. 240 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
