Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
The Patriots checked most of the boxes and earned a B-.

Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Patriots spent the Round 7 slot on J.J. Weaver, a name most had 122 spots down the list. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.

Landing Mullings that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes. They bet on numbers rather than a single high pick.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick6 Rnd1 Wyatt Milum
In the 6th overall pick they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick41 Rnd2 Nick Emmanwori
A safety of that caliber at pick 41 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick72 Rnd3 Alfred Collins
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Alfred Collins. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick97 Rnd3 Jay Higgins
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jay Higgins in No. 97, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick108 Rnd4 Jake Majors
You do not let an offensive lineman like Jake Majors reach Round 4, Pick 7 and blink. They did not. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick141 Rnd5 Miles Frazier
Miles Frazier at slot 141 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick144 Rnd5 Kalel Mullings
Kalel Mullings in pick 144 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It fills a real need, too.
Pick164 Rnd5 Maxwell Hairston
They reached into another round for Maxwell Hairston, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick218 Rnd7 Kyren Lacy
Kyren Lacy in No. 218 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick223 Rnd7 J.J. Weaver
This one needs a full-page explanation: J.J. Weaver in the Round 7 slot, miles early. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick239 Rnd7 Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey in pick No. 239 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick242 Rnd7 Jaylin Noel
A wild overpay on Jaylin Noel in the 242nd pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
