The Patriots let Riley fall into their laps, and walked away with a B. Call it larceny. Quincy Riley sat on the board until the Round 7 slot, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
Fairchild has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The phones were where this weekend was really won.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Kelvin Banks Jr.
In Round 1, Pick 6 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick36
Rnd2
James Pearce Jr.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on James Pearce Jr.. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick37
Rnd2
Dylan Fairchild
Dylan Fairchild at pick No. 37 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick67
Rnd3
Colston Loveland
They did well to land Colston Loveland in the 67th pick, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick93
Rnd3
Nick Emmanwori
A tidy little value on Nick Emmanwori in the 93rd overall pick, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick103
Rnd4
Quinshon Judkins
Quinshon Judkins in No. 103 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick139
Rnd5
Jaishawn Barham
A reach for Jaishawn Barham in slot 139; a little patience would have been rewarded. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick217
Rnd7
Quincy Riley
Quincy Riley at pick 217 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick220
Rnd7
Kyren Lacy
Good price on Kyren Lacy in the 220th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick235
Rnd7
Makari Paige
Somehow Makari Paige was still sitting there in Round 7, Pick 21, and they pounced on premier safety value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
