Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Patriots won the night they stopped Reid from sliding. Grade: B-. You could see the war room lean forward. Karene Reid at the Round 5 slot is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. If Lacy pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Kelvin Banks Jr.
In No. 3 they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick41
Rnd2
Jack Sawyer
A tidy little value on Jack Sawyer in the 41st pick, a step better than break-even. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick72
Rnd3
Dylan Fairchild
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Dylan Fairchild in pick No. 72. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick86
Rnd3
Tacario Davis
Tacario Davis at pick 86 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick108
Rnd4
Evan Stewart
Evan Stewart slipping to the 108th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick144
Rnd5
Karene Reid
You do not let a linebacker like Karene Reid reach the Round 5 slot and blink. They did not. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick218
Rnd7
Donovan Edwards
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Donovan Edwards at slot 218. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick220
Rnd7
Kyren Lacy
Kyren Lacy in Round 7, Pick 6 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick236
Rnd7
Azareye'h Thomas
A slide stopped in the Round 7 slot, with Azareye'h Thomas worth more than the price. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick256
Rnd7
Jack Velling
The board had Jack Velling higher than the 256th overall pick, and the tight end fell to them anyway. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
