Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesD- FutureA+
Grand theft in No. 80: the Patriots steal James and grade out a B.

You build a draft on nights like this. Jordan James had no business being available in pick No. 80, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.

If Slackman pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.

Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick14 Rnd1 Will Campbell
In pick 14 they get an anchor for the offensive line, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick41 Rnd2 Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori in the 41st pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick49 Rnd2 Luther Burden III
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Luther Burden III in the Round 2 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick72 Rnd3 Dylan Fairchild
Value with a capital V on Dylan Fairchild in No. 72, a genuine coup. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick80 Rnd3 Jordan James
Jordan James at the 80th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick86 Rnd3 Jake Majors
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Jake Majors in Round 3, Pick 22, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick108 Rnd4 Jay Higgins
The board fumbled Jay Higgins all the way to pick No. 108, and they scooped it up. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick144 Rnd5 Jack Bech
They jumped the gun on Jack Bech, taking him earlier than his grade liked. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick218 Rnd7 Gunnar Helm
They will replay Gunnar Helm at the 218th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick220 Rnd7 Joey Slackman
Joey Slackman in the 220th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick236 Rnd7 Kevin Winston Jr.
Circle this one: Kevin Winston Jr. at slot 236 is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick256 Rnd7 Dorian Strong
They reached a country mile for Dorian Strong at No. 256, and the board is aghast. A minor itch, scratched.
