Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesF FutureA+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Patriots to a B-.

Some picks age like wine; Josaiah Stewart at pick No. 98 will need to, sitting 35 spots clear of his grade. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Brooks.

The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick13 Rnd1 Tetairoa McMillan
No edge and no loss on Tetairoa McMillan in pick 13; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick34 Rnd2 Ashton Gillotte
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ashton Gillotte. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick45 Rnd2 Josh Conerly Jr.
Josh Conerly Jr. at the 45th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick66 Rnd3 Quincy Riley
A straight-up fair deal on Quincy Riley at slot 66, value and slot in agreement. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick77 Rnd3 Sebastian Castro
Sebastian Castro at No. 77 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick98 Rnd4 Josaiah Stewart
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Josaiah Stewart well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick130 Rnd5 Tahj Brooks
A quiet steal in Round 5, Pick 2: Tahj Brooks for less than the market said. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick194 Rnd7 Xavier Truss
A reach on Xavier Truss in pick No. 194; the board had better options right there. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
