Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall D-
ValueA- NeedB TradesF FutureD
Boyd should have been long gone. The Patriots pounced, and earned a D-.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Patriots did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. It grades a D-, and the process earned it.

However the rest shakes out, Boyd at that price is a win they earned. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The cost of the Corum reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick Analysis
Pick17 Rnd1 Joe Alt
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the offensive line at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick21 Rnd1 Brock Bowers
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get a red-zone target to build around, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick22 Rnd1 Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In slot 22 they get a long-term starter on the line, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Pick27 Rnd1 Rome Odunze
In pick 27 they get a weapon on the perimeter, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick29 Rnd1 Ja'Tavion Sanders
Ja'Tavion Sanders in the 29th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick31 Rnd1 Brian Thomas Jr.
In pick No. 31 they get a true top target, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick34 Rnd2 Drake Maye
They barely believed it either: Drake Maye still on the board at the 34th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick68 Rnd3 Keon Coleman
Somehow Keon Coleman was still sitting there in the Round 3 slot, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick74 Rnd3 Blake Corum
A reach for Blake Corum in No. 74; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick79 Rnd3 Bralen Trice
Bralen Trice slipping to pick 79 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick104 Rnd4 Jaden Hicks
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Jaden Hicks in Round 4, Pick 4, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick224 Rnd7 Dwight McGlothern
Dwight McGlothern at pick No. 224 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick229 Rnd7 Khristian Boyd
Taking Khristian Boyd in slot 229 is close to grand larceny; an edge rusher that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
