A respectable, level-headed haul for the Patriots: B-.

The Patriots did not so much draft Kaimon Rucker as overpay for him, 130 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.

However the rest shakes out, Mondon Jr. at that price is a win they earned. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Omarion Hampton in No. 41 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.

They will replay Malaki Starks at the 72nd overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.

The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jayden Higgins. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.

Steal is underselling it; Kevin Winston Jr. at Round 7, Pick 25 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
