FutureA
Best value of the weekend goes to the Patriots for Gabriel: C+. The rest of the league will want that one back. Dillon Gabriel tumbling to the Patriots in pick No. 85 is a gift they did not have to think twice about.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They will need Cornelius to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In the 28th pick they get a downhill thumper at linebacker, and a steal at that.
Pick34
Rnd2
Tacario Davis
Nothing to complain about; Tacario Davis went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick38
Rnd2
Ajani Cornelius
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Ajani Cornelius. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick60
Rnd2
Parker Brailsford
Parker Brailsford in the 60th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick66
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
The board had TreVeyon Henderson higher than the Round 3 slot, and the running back fell to them anyway. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick85
Rnd3
Dillon Gabriel
Dillon Gabriel at pick 85 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick92
Rnd3
Sebastian Castro
They read the board right and Sebastian Castro was the payoff at pick No. 92. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick98
Rnd4
Nic Anderson
Nic Anderson at No. 98 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick130
Rnd5
Dylan Fairchild
They did well to land Dylan Fairchild in the Round 5 slot, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick134
Rnd5
Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren at pick 134 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick139
Rnd5
Jasheen Davis
No edge and no loss on Jasheen Davis in pick No. 139; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick194
Rnd7
Zy Alexander
They paid sticker price for Zy Alexander in slot 194, and that is fine. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
