Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
D
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesF
FutureA
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Patriots to a D. The Patriots treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the 154th overall pick on Noah Thomas a full 51 spots early. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
However the rest shakes out, Howard at that price is a win they earned.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick7
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In Round 1, Pick 7 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick34
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyler Booker. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick39
Rnd2
Xavier Nwankpa
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Nwankpa at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick40
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
They let Kenneth Grant come to them and pounced at pick No. 40. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick66
Rnd3
Parker Brailsford
A straight-up fair deal on Parker Brailsford at No. 66, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick98
Rnd4
Raheim Sanders
Raheim Sanders at the 98th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Pick129
Rnd5
Xavier Restrepo
Xavier Restrepo at pick 129 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick130
Rnd5
Collin Oliver
A clean, defensible pick in the 130th overall pick with a little surplus value in Collin Oliver. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick154
Rnd5
Noah Thomas
This one needs a full-page explanation: Noah Thomas in the 154th pick, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick194
Rnd7
Will Howard
Circle this one: Will Howard at slot 194 is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
