The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Dylan Sampson, the No. 52 name on the board, sitting there at No. 160 like a gift left on the doorstep.

Reaching for Griffith left real value on the table behind him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.

The trade work was a quiet net positive. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
