The Patriots cashed the board's mistake on Horton: A-.

Whoever sat across the table from the Patriots should ask for a receipt. They cleaned the room out, prying loose far more value than they gave up, and it was the quiet MVP of their weekend. The sum of the weekend is a deserved A-.

They banked enough surplus on Horton to cover a lot of smaller sins. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.

They will answer for taking linebacker early while edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots went begging. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.

Bottom line, with Abdul Carter leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.

No drama and no debate, Abdul Carter went about where he belonged in the Round 1 slot. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick34 Rnd2 Jonah Savaiinaea
Jonah Savaiinaea at slot 34 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. The roster fit checks out.
Pick44 Rnd2 Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. at Round 2, Pick 12 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick66 Rnd3 Jordan Hancock
Nothing to complain about; Jordan Hancock went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick85 Rnd3 Sebastian Castro
Sebastian Castro in pick 85 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick98 Rnd4 Tory Horton
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Tory Horton in the 98th pick, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick114 Rnd4 Dasan McCullough
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots to take Dasan McCullough, a linebacker that was not the priority.
Pick130 Rnd5 Raheim Sanders
They barely believed it either: Raheim Sanders still on the board at the 130th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick178 Rnd6 Will Howard
They paid sticker price for Will Howard in Round 6, Pick 18, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick181 Rnd6 Marcus Mbow
No edge and no loss on Marcus Mbow in pick No. 181; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick194 Rnd7 Will Sheppard
They will replay Will Sheppard at the 194th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
