Nobody dealt better than the Patriots this weekend: B. The PJ Williams pick is the one that will follow the Patriots into the fall. They took him 49 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.
The Allen pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick63
Rnd2
CJ Allen
Taking CJ Allen in No. 63 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick95
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Zakee Wheatley in the 95th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick125
Rnd4
Beau Stephens
The board had cheaper options than Beau Stephens at the Round 4 slot, and it noticed. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick131
Rnd4
Eli Raridon
A tidy little value on Eli Raridon in pick 131, a step better than break-even. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick169
Rnd5
Pat Coogan
A reach for Pat Coogan in the 169th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick189
Rnd6
PJ Williams
They talked themselves into PJ Williams at Round 6, Pick 10, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
Pick200
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
They went early on Trey Zuhn III in Round 6, Pick 21, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick207
Rnd6
De'Zhaun Stribling
They paid up for De'Zhaun Stribling at pick 207 when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick210
Rnd6
Riley Mahlman
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Riley Mahlman. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick247
Rnd7
Shamar Easter
Shamar Easter at slot 247 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It fills a real need, too.
