Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall
A-
ValueB-

TradesA+
FutureA-
The Panthers won the night they stopped James from sliding. Grade: A-. Somebody in slot 98 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Panthers sat still while DJ James, the No. 53 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A-.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The Robinson reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
It is a haul that will look even better come September.
Pick Analysis
Pick51
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette at Round 2, Pick 19 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick54
Rnd2
Payton Wilson
They took Payton Wilson at par in the 54th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick65
Rnd3
Ja'Lynn Polk
Ja'Lynn Polk in No. 65 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick98
Rnd3
DJ James
Somehow DJ James was still sitting there in pick 98, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick101
Rnd4
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter in pick No. 101 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick121
Rnd4
James Williams
They paid sticker price for James Williams in slot 121, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick142
Rnd5
Tommy Eichenberg
A straight-up fair deal on Tommy Eichenberg at the 142nd pick, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick145
Rnd5
Layden Robinson
They reached into another round for Layden Robinson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick166
Rnd5
Tahj Washington
They reached a country mile for Tahj Washington at No. 166, and the board is aghast. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick208
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
Value said wait; Frank Gore Jr. in Round 6, Pick 33 says they were not listening. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick240
Rnd7
Kimani Vidal
Kimani Vidal at slot 240 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
