The Panthers cashed the board's mistake on Harris: B-. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Panthers were there to profit. Jermari Harris, the No. 183 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 7 slot. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. If Brown pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. A whole weekend of picks and linebacker is somehow still a want.
The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the linebacker spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Jack Sawyer
No edge and no loss on Jack Sawyer in Round 1, Pick 8; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick39
Rnd2
Deone Walker
A slide stopped in pick 39, with Deone Walker worth more than the price. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick45
Rnd2
Shavon Revel Jr.
Shavon Revel Jr. at No. 45 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick70
Rnd3
Kevin Winston Jr.
They went early on Kevin Winston Jr. in slot 70, and the value did not follow. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick80
Rnd3
Ajani Cornelius
Ajani Cornelius at pick No. 80 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
Pick102
Rnd4
Nick Emmanwori
The board fumbled Nick Emmanwori all the way to the 102nd overall pick, and they scooped it up. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick143
Rnd5
Barion Brown
Barion Brown at the Round 5 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick159
Rnd5
Phil Mafah
Taking Phil Mafah in the 159th pick is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick217
Rnd7
Jermari Harris
They robbed the room for Jermari Harris here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick231
Rnd7
Azareye'h Thomas
They barely believed it either: Azareye'h Thomas still on the board at No. 231. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
