FutureB
The steal of the weekend belongs to the Panthers and Melton: B-. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Panthers were there to profit. Max Melton, the No. 76 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 101.
They will need Bortolini to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Leaving linebacker unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Ladd McConkey
No edge and no loss on Ladd McConkey in slot 33; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick39
Rnd2
Chris Braswell
They took Chris Braswell at par in pick 39, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick88
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter at pick No. 88 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
Pick101
Rnd4
Max Melton
They barely believed it either: Max Melton still on the board at the Round 4 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick142
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey in the 142nd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick166
Rnd5
Tanor Bortolini
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tanor Bortolini. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick240
Rnd7
Miyan Williams
Miyan Williams in No. 240 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
