Platoon Daddy DRAFTING FOR THEPanthers

Gould should have been long gone. The Panthers pounced, and earned a B. Somebody in the 240th pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Panthers sat still while Anthony Gould, the No. 142 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
That safety hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Reaching for Wilson left real value on the table behind him.
They went 6 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Chop Robinson
Value with a capital V on Chop Robinson in No. 33, a genuine coup. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick39
Rnd2
Payton Wilson
A real head-scratcher, Payton Wilson in the 39th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick65
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
No edge and no loss on Sedrick Van Pran in slot 65; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick101
Rnd4
DJ James
Circle this one: DJ James at Round 4, Pick 1 is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick142
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Luke McCaffrey. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick166
Rnd5
Dallin Holker
Dallin Holker slid further than he should have, and pick 166 is lovely value for the tight end. The roster fit checks out.
Pick240
Rnd7
Anthony Gould
Taking Anthony Gould in the 240th pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
