Draft Grade — Cardinals
Overall
C
ValueF
NeedA-
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Cardinals finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a C. The Cardinals clearly saw something nobody else did in Jaden Shirden, taking him 213 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
The whole projection now runs through J.J. McCarthy; hit there and everything else looks smarter. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Malik Nabers
They took Malik Nabers at par in No. 4, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick27
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
J.J. McCarthy in the Round 1 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick35
Rnd2
Xavier Thomas
Xavier Thomas at pick 35 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick65
Rnd3
Malik Mustapha
A wild overpay on Malik Mustapha in the 65th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick66
Rnd3
Jaden Shirden
They talked themselves into Jaden Shirden at Round 3, Pick 2, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick90
Rnd3
Joe Milton III
They reached into another round for Joe Milton III, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick104
Rnd4
Austin Reed
Value said wait; Austin Reed in Round 4, Pick 4 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick162
Rnd5
Jackson Mitchell
Jackson Mitchell at pick 162 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick186
Rnd6
Kingsley Eguakun
Kingsley Eguakun in the 186th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
