Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall
B+
ValueB
NeedA-
TradesA+
FutureB-
The Panthers let McClellan fall and pounced. Final grade: B+. The trade table was a mismatch, and the Panthers were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.
They banked enough surplus on McClellan to cover a lot of smaller sins. The linebacker spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Darren Waller pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 6 of 9 of the wish list covered.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Adonai Mitchell
Adonai Mitchell in pick 33 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick47
Rnd2
Chris Braswell
Fair-plus on Chris Braswell, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick65
Rnd3
DJ James
They read the board right and DJ James was the payoff at slot 65. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick101
Rnd4
Calen Bullock
Taking Calen Bullock in No. 101 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick142
Rnd5
Christian Jones
Christian Jones in the 142nd pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick166
Rnd5
Javion Cohen
They took Javion Cohen at par in the Round 5 slot, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Pick216
Rnd6
Jase McClellan
The board fumbled Jase McClellan all the way to Round 6, Pick 41, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
