Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesB FutureB-
The steal of the weekend belongs to the Panthers and Edwards: B.

You build a draft on nights like this. Donovan Edwards had no business being available in the Round 7 slot, and the Panthers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.

The linebacker spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Mickens has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.

Good work on the whole, with linebacker the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Mike Green
Mike Green in pick 18 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick44 Rnd2 Xavier Watts
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Watts at No. 44 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick57 Rnd2 Tre Harris
Good price on Tre Harris in the 57th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick74 Rnd3 Darien Porter
They paid sticker price for Darien Porter in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick82 Rnd3 Elijah Arroyo
A quiet steal in pick No. 82: Elijah Arroyo for less than the market said. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick111 Rnd4 Jordan Phillips
A tidy little value on Jordan Phillips in the 111th overall pick, a step better than break-even. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick140 Rnd5 Pat Bryant
Pat Bryant at Round 5, Pick 2 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick146 Rnd5 Emery Jones Jr.
They will replay Emery Jones Jr. at slot 146 for years; that is how good the value is. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick163 Rnd5 Tommi Hill
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tommi Hill at No. 163. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick188 Rnd6 R.J. Mickens
A reach on R.J. Mickens in the 188th pick; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick227 Rnd7 Donovan Edwards
Donovan Edwards in the 227th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
