Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall

FutureB-
Grand theft in the 196th overall pick: the Panthers steal King and grade out a B+. Somebody in pick No. 196 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Panthers sat still while Kobe King, the No. 130 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. No fireworks, but a solid B+.
Reaching for Wilson left real value on the table behind him. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. The Panthers paired the rookies with proven help, Tyreek Hill leading the way.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Shemar Stewart
In No. 14 they get a premier pass rusher. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick45
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks slipping to pick No. 45 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick61
Rnd2
Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson in the Round 2 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick74
Rnd3
Darien Porter
No edge and no loss on Darien Porter in the 74th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick114
Rnd4
Cam Skattebo
A tidy bit of business in the 114th pick, where Cam Skattebo graded well above the range. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick140
Rnd5
Andres Borregales
A reach for Andres Borregales in pick 140; a little patience would have been rewarded. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick196
Rnd6
Kobe King
Kobe King in slot 196 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick230
Rnd7
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at Round 7, Pick 14 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
