Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall F
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesF FutureD
The Panthers reached for Johnson and never recovered. Grade: F.

The Panthers did not so much draft Theo Johnson as overpay for him, 80 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain. They banked enough surplus on Smith to cover a lot of smaller sins.

They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

In short, a weekend the front office will want to forget in a hurry.

Pick Analysis
Pick33 Rnd2 Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette at slot 33 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick34 Rnd2 Troy Franklin
Troy Franklin is a better player than pick 34 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick65 Rnd3 Kiran Amegadjie
Nice patience on Kiran Amegadjie, who had no business lasting to No. 65. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick66 Rnd3 Theo Johnson
They left a pile of value on the table to take Theo Johnson this early at Round 3, Pick 2. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick101 Rnd4 Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni in the 101st overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick133 Rnd4 Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith in pick No. 133 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick168 Rnd5 Tanor Bortolini
A big swing on Tanor Bortolini at the Round 5 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick180 Rnd6 Isaiah Davis
Isaiah Davis at the 180th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick222 Rnd7 Jordan Whittington
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jordan Whittington in No. 222, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
