FutureA+
The Packers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D. The Packers went off the board in a big way for Cole Payton, 61 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Slaughter at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, running back very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In the 6th pick they get a rangy last line of defense at fair value. More want than need.
Pick24
Rnd1
Caleb Lomu
In pick 24 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick39
Rnd2
D'Angelo Ponds
A premium they did not need to pay, D'Angelo Ponds a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick52
Rnd2
Jacob Rodriguez
Jacob Rodriguez at the 52nd overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick84
Rnd3
Jake Slaughter
You do not let an offensive lineman like Jake Slaughter reach Round 3, Pick 20 and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick112
Rnd4
Mikail Kamara
They reached a country mile for Mikail Kamara at pick No. 112, and the board is aghast. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick120
Rnd4
Malik Muhammad
Malik Muhammad in No. 120 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick150
Rnd5
Chase Roberts
A conviction pick on Chase Roberts at the 150th overall pick that the board grades a round light. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick158
Rnd5
Kaleb Proctor
They went early on Kaleb Proctor in pick 158, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick177
Rnd5
Cole Payton
A real head-scratcher, Cole Payton in pick No. 177 is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick199
Rnd6
Aiden Fisher
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Aiden Fisher. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick236
Rnd7
Andre Fuller
No drama and no debate, Andre Fuller went about where he belonged in the 236th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick254
Rnd7
Nolan Rucci
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Nolan Rucci. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick257
Rnd7
Riley Nowakowski
Riley Nowakowski at Round 7, Pick 41 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
