Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
C+
ValueC-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Bears did enough to get by: C+. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Anthony Lucas at slot 57, a reach of 57 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.
Landing Wallace III that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
If Olaivavega Ioane and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Olaivavega Ioane
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a building block for the line at fair value.
Pick57
Rnd2
Anthony Lucas
Anthony Lucas at pick No. 57 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick60
Rnd2
Dani Dennis-Sutton
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Dani Dennis-Sutton. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick89
Rnd3
Tyreak Sapp
A real head-scratcher, Tyreak Sapp in the Round 3 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick129
Rnd4
Mason Reiger
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Mason Reiger well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick239
Rnd7
Harrison Wallace III
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Harrison Wallace III in slot 239, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick241
Rnd7
Kalil Alexander
Kalil Alexander at the 241st pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
