The Packers kept it disciplined and banked a B-.

You can draft well and still miss the point. The Packers did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to edge rusher, which was the need that mattered most. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.

Getting Payton where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They left with cornerback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

A reasonable price with a little left over, Lee Hunter in the 52nd overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick84 Rnd3 Malik Muhammad
A straight-up fair deal on Malik Muhammad at Round 3, Pick 20, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick120 Rnd4 Parker Brailsford
Nothing to complain about; Parker Brailsford went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick158 Rnd5 Davison Igbinosun
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Davison Igbinosun. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick199 Rnd6 David Gusta
They took David Gusta at par in No. 199, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.

Quietly one of the better values of the day, Noah Whittington at the Round 7 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.

Cole Payton is a better player than slot 254 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.

John Michael Gyllenborg slid further than he should have, and the 257th pick is lovely value for the tight end. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
