Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
C+
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesC-
FutureB
The jury is out on the 49ers. For now, C+. The 49ers torched the value chart for Xavier Nwankpa, taking him 48 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. A mixed bag that lands at C+.
It is not that Nwankpa is a bad player; it is that the 49ers had louder needs to answer first. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Bernard pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
The 49ers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
If Arvell Reese and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker, and a steal at that.
Pick79
Rnd3
Germie Bernard
The board had Germie Bernard higher than the Round 3 slot, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick87
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
They paid sticker price for Zakee Wheatley in the 87th pick, and that is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick114
Rnd4
Parker Brailsford
This one needs a full-page explanation: Parker Brailsford in the 114th overall pick, miles early. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick122
Rnd4
Zachariah Branch
Fair-plus on Zachariah Branch, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick138
Rnd4
Jude Bowry
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jude Bowry. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick139
Rnd4
Xavier Nwankpa
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback and edge rusher to take Xavier Nwankpa, a safety that was not the priority.
Pick140
Rnd4
Zane Durant
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Zane Durant well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick156
Rnd5
Eric Rivers
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Eric Rivers at pick No. 156. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick162
Rnd5
Connor Tollison
A reach on Connor Tollison in the 162nd pick; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick174
Rnd5
Oscar Delp
Oscar Delp at the 174th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
Pick175
Rnd5
Le'Veon Moss
Le'Veon Moss at Round 5, Pick 35 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick248
Rnd7
Brandon Inniss
They took Brandon Inniss at par in No. 248, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick252
Rnd7
J. Michael Sturdivant
They paid up for J. Michael Sturdivant at pick 252 when waiting would have done the job. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
