The Steelers won the night they stopped Bullock from sliding. Grade: C+. Somebody in Round 4, Pick 20 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Steelers sat still while Calen Bullock, the No. 74 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. It washes out to a C+, no better and no worse.
The cost of the McCaffrey reach is exactly the players who went right after him. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. The Van Pran pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman and tight end still on the board.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick Analysis
Pick41
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
Value with a capital V on Tyler Guyton in the Round 2 slot, a genuine coup. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick58
Rnd2
Sedrick Van Pran
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Sedrick Van Pran at offensive lineman with interior defensive lineman and tight end open.
Pick61
Rnd2
Jaden Hicks
A premium they did not need to pay, Jaden Hicks a notch or two before his time. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick84
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman and tight end to take Cooper Beebe, an offensive lineman that was not the priority.
Pick88
Rnd3
Cam Hart
Cam Hart at slot 88 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick91
Rnd3
Brandon Dorlus
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Brandon Dorlus in the 91st pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick92
Rnd3
Cedric Gray
A big swing on Cedric Gray at Round 3, Pick 29, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick120
Rnd4
Calen Bullock
A safety of that caliber at No. 120 is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick121
Rnd4
Luke McCaffrey
They left a pile of value on the table to take Luke McCaffrey this early at the 121st overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
Pick197
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
A wild overpay on Frank Gore Jr. in the 197th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick238
Rnd7
Taulia Tagovailoa
Taulia Tagovailoa at Round 7, Pick 18 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
