Draft Grade — Packers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB
FutureB-
The Packers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-. The Packers torched the value chart for Gabe Hall, taking him 40 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick29
Rnd1
Quinyon Mitchell
Quinyon Mitchell at Round 1, Pick 29 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick38
Rnd2
Kamren Kinchens
Kamren Kinchens at the 38th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick39
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
They took Tyler Guyton at par in slot 39, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Pick57
Rnd2
Trey Benson
The board had cheaper options than Trey Benson at pick No. 57, and it noticed. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick58
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
Edgerrin Cooper in the 58th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick88
Rnd3
Maason Smith
A want over a need in the Round 3 slot: Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick90
Rnd3
Mike Sainristil
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Mike Sainristil in pick 90. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick93
Rnd3
Marist Liufau
A curious use of the 93rd pick. Edge rusher, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Marist Liufau did not.
Pick97
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson in the Round 3 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick132
Rnd4
Braelon Allen
They left a pile of value on the table to take Braelon Allen this early at slot 132. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick167
Rnd5
Gabe Hall
Gabe Hall in pick No. 167 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
