The Panthers turned the phones into found money: B+. If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Panthers, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.
It is not that Farmer is a bad player; it is that the Panthers had louder needs to answer first. They will need Schwesinger to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
Landing McMillan that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Tetairoa McMillan
In slot 20 they get a true top target, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick44
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell at pick No. 44 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick51
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
Xavier Watts in the 51st overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick57
Rnd2
Carson Schwesinger
A reach on Carson Schwesinger in No. 57; the board had better options right there. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick74
Rnd3
Deone Walker
Deone Walker in the 74th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick85
Rnd3
Ashton Gillotte
Ashton Gillotte at the Round 3 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick111
Rnd4
Joshua Farmer
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback to take Joshua Farmer, an interior defensive lineman that was not the priority.
Pick114
Rnd4
Denzel Burke
By-the-book stuff, Denzel Burke at Round 4, Pick 12 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick140
Rnd5
Hollin Pierce
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Hollin Pierce. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick146
Rnd5
Logan Brown
A straight-up fair deal on Logan Brown at the 146th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick163
Rnd5
Kyle Williams
They paid up for Kyle Williams at Round 5, Pick 25 when waiting would have done the job. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick204
Rnd6
Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey in pick 204 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick208
Rnd6
Kyle Monangai
Kyle Monangai in the Round 6 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick230
Rnd7
Jermari Harris
Jermari Harris at the 230th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
