FutureB-
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Packers a B+. The Packers spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Javon Baker, the No. 191 name on the board, in No. 246.
They will need Thomas to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Taliese Fuaga
Taliese Fuaga in pick 33 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick53
Rnd2
Amarius Mims
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Amarius Mims in pick No. 53, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick57
Rnd2
Trey Benson
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Trey Benson well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick92
Rnd3
Jermaine Burton
Somehow Jermaine Burton was still sitting there in No. 92, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The roster fit checks out.
Pick98
Rnd3
Josh Newton
They barely believed it either: Josh Newton still on the board at pick 98. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick121
Rnd4
Keith Randolph Jr.
Keith Randolph Jr. at pick No. 121 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick126
Rnd4
Audric Estime
Audric Estime in slot 126 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick135
Rnd4
Kris Abrams-Draine
A quiet steal in the Round 4 slot: Kris Abrams-Draine for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick137
Rnd5
Ainias Smith
They read the board right and Ainias Smith was the payoff at Round 5, Pick 1. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick156
Rnd5
James Williams
James Williams at the 156th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick158
Rnd5
Zion Tupuola-Fetui
This one needs a full-page explanation: Zion Tupuola-Fetui in slot 158, miles early. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick177
Rnd6
Jaylen Wright
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jaylen Wright at Round 6, Pick 2. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick178
Rnd6
Jaylan Ford
Jaylan Ford in the Round 6 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick203
Rnd6
Curtis Jacobs
The board had Curtis Jacobs higher than No. 203, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick214
Rnd6
Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett in the 214th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick217
Rnd6
Isaiah Davis
Taking Isaiah Davis in pick No. 217 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick219
Rnd6
Xavier Thomas
Value said wait; Xavier Thomas in pick 219 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick239
Rnd7
Ethan Driskell
Circle this one: Ethan Driskell at the 239th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick246
Rnd7
Javon Baker
You do not let a wide receiver like Javon Baker reach the Round 7 slot and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick252
Rnd7
Miyan Williams
Miyan Williams in No. 252 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
