FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B for the Steelers. The tape said wait; the Steelers did not. Xavier Thomas went at pick No. 224, a good 40 picks before the board was ready. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
The Steelers indulged a want in McLaughlin while a need in running back and tight end stayed open. A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want.
That is a quarterback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Tyler Nubin
In slot 17 they get a rangy last line of defense. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick67
Rnd3
Tyler Guyton
A tidy little value on Tyler Guyton in No. 67, a step better than break-even. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick73
Rnd3
Ruke Orhorhoro
They took Ruke Orhorhoro at par in pick No. 73, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick81
Rnd3
Cam Hart
A big swing on Cam Hart at pick 81, well ahead of any board in the building. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick96
Rnd3
Max Melton
They reached into another round for Max Melton, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick113
Rnd4
Spencer Rattler
Spencer Rattler slipping to Round 4, Pick 13 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick116
Rnd4
Payton Wilson
A wild overpay on Payton Wilson in pick 116, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
Pick121
Rnd4
Seth McLaughlin
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Seth McLaughlin adds an offensive lineman and leaves running back and tight end untouched.
Pick198
Rnd6
Cornelius Johnson
Cornelius Johnson at the 198th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick224
Rnd7
Xavier Thomas
Xavier Thomas at the Round 7 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
