Draft Grade — Bears

FutureB-
The Bears let Lachey fall and pounced. Final grade: B. Somebody in the Round 7 slot was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Bears sat still while Luke Lachey, the No. 190 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
Judkins has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Nick Emmanwori
In the 14th pick they get a rangy last line of defense. Need was not the driver here.
Pick39
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
A reach for JT Tuimoloau in Round 2, Pick 7; a little patience would have been rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick41
Rnd2
Quinshon Judkins
They talked themselves into Quinshon Judkins at slot 41, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick45
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell in No. 45 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick72
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson at the 72nd overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick149
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dont'e Thornton Jr. well ahead of where he belonged. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick234
Rnd7
Luke Lachey
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Luke Lachey in pick No. 234, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick235
Rnd7
John Williams
John Williams at the Round 7 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick242
Rnd7
Akili Arnold
Circle this one: Akili Arnold at pick 242 is a fall that decides a draft. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
