Draft Grade — Jets
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesF FutureB-
Penix Jr. is the plan now, and the Jets grade out a D-.

The rest of the league had time to spare on Frank Gore Jr.; the Jets did not wait, grabbing him 124 spots ahead at slot 136.

So much rides on Michael Penix Jr. that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.

The Pearsall steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.

It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.

Pick Analysis
Pick10 Rnd1 Michael Penix Jr.
In Round 1, Pick 10 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick25 Rnd1 Dallas Turner
In pick No. 25 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick35 Rnd2 JT Tuimoloau
They took JT Tuimoloau at par in the 35th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick55 Rnd2 Brian Thomas Jr.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Brian Thomas Jr.. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick57 Rnd2 Javon Foster
A straight-up fair deal on Javon Foster at No. 57, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick71 Rnd3 Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick87 Rnd3 Marist Liufau
Marist Liufau in pick 87 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick99 Rnd3 Nazir Stackhouse
A tidy little value on Nazir Stackhouse in slot 99, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick105 Rnd4 Luke Lachey
They paid sticker price for Luke Lachey in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick128 Rnd4 Jaden Hicks
Jaden Hicks at No. 128 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick132 Rnd4 Max Melton
They let Max Melton come to them and pounced at the 132nd overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick134 Rnd4 Theo Wease
By-the-book stuff, Theo Wease at pick No. 134 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick136 Rnd4 Frank Gore Jr.
A big swing on Frank Gore Jr. at the 136th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
Pick144 Rnd5 Sataoa Laumea
No edge and no loss on Sataoa Laumea in Round 5, Pick 8; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick167 Rnd5 Connor Colby
Connor Colby at No. 167 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick173 Rnd5 Ashton Gillotte
Ashton Gillotte in the Round 5 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick185 Rnd6 JT Daniels
A reach on JT Daniels in slot 185; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick202 Rnd6 Fabien Lovett
Somehow Fabien Lovett was still sitting there in the 202nd overall pick, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick255 Rnd7 Ricky Pearsall
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Ricky Pearsall in Round 7, Pick 35, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick256 Rnd7 Tyreek Chappell
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 256, where Tyreek Chappell graded well above the range. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
