Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall

TradesB-
FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the Chargers: B-. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Chargers reached some 124 spots for Phillip Webb, and value like that does not grow back. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Gordon II. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes. The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick39
Rnd2
Colston Loveland
Colston Loveland at pick 39 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick41
Rnd2
TreVeyon Henderson
The board had cheaper options than TreVeyon Henderson at pick No. 41, and it noticed. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick55
Rnd2
Tate Ratledge
Tate Ratledge at the Round 2 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick125
Rnd4
Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson at slot 125 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster fit checks out.
Pick158
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues in Round 5, Pick 20 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick181
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the 181st overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick199
Rnd6
Jaylen Reed
Jaylen Reed is a better player than No. 199 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick209
Rnd6
Ollie Gordon II
Ollie Gordon II at Round 6, Pick 33 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick214
Rnd6
Phillip Webb
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Phillip Webb well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick256
Rnd7
Jasheen Davis
A big swing on Jasheen Davis at the 256th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
