Draft Grade — Falcons

The Falcons finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a D-. The Falcons did not so much draft Jordan Jefferson as overpay for him, 169 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.
Michael Penix Jr. is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
That Rakestraw Jr. pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, running back very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Michael Penix Jr.
In the 8th overall pick they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick12
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick43
Rnd2
Chop Robinson
Chop Robinson at the Round 2 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick64
Rnd2
Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
They robbed the room for Ennis Rakestraw Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick70
Rnd3
Edgerrin Cooper
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Edgerrin Cooper in pick No. 70. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick109
Rnd4
Dominick Puni
A tidy little value on Dominick Puni in slot 109, a step better than break-even. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick111
Rnd4
Cade Stover
They liked Cade Stover enough to skip the value, taking him in the 111th pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick128
Rnd4
Jordan Travis
The board had cheaper options than Jordan Travis at the Round 4 slot, and it noticed. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick143
Rnd5
Justin Rogers
Justin Rogers at the 143rd overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick145
Rnd5
James Williams
They let James Williams come to them and pounced at slot 145. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick147
Rnd5
Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith in No. 147 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick189
Rnd6
Matthew Jones
Matthew Jones in pick No. 189 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick205
Rnd6
Dwight McGlothern
A reach on Dwight McGlothern in pick 205; the board had better options right there. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick230
Rnd7
Jordan Jefferson
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jordan Jefferson this early at Round 7, Pick 10. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick243
Rnd7
Grayson Murphy
Grayson Murphy at the Round 7 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick248
Rnd7
Aaron Lewis
Aaron Lewis in No. 248 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
