Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB TradesC FutureA+
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Patriots a B.

The Patriots torched the value chart for Joshua Cephus, taking him 44 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted.

They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. McCarthy at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Adding Jamaree Salyer by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.

It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick34 Rnd2 Ladd McConkey
By-the-book stuff, Ladd McConkey at Round 2, Pick 2 squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick37 Rnd2 Tyler Guyton
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Guyton at pick No. 37, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick50 Rnd2 J.J. McCarthy
A quiet steal in No. 50: J.J. McCarthy for less than the market said. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick53 Rnd2 Patrick Paul
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 2 slot with a little surplus value in Patrick Paul. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick68 Rnd3 Ruke Orhorhoro
No drama and no debate, Ruke Orhorhoro went about where he belonged in slot 68. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick69 Rnd3 Christian Haynes
No edge and no loss on Christian Haynes in the 69th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick104 Rnd4 Jaden Hicks
Jaden Hicks in No. 104 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick106 Rnd4 Malik Washington
They jumped the gun on Malik Washington, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick136 Rnd4 Jaheim Bell
Jaheim Bell at Round 4, Pick 36 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Pick182 Rnd6 Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. at pick 182 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It fills a real need, too.
Pick229 Rnd7 Joshua Cephus
They talked themselves into Joshua Cephus at the 229th overall pick, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
