FutureB-
Larceny in pick No. 149 lands the Bears a B+, Mestemaker and all. The rest of the league will want that one back. Drew Mestemaker tumbling to the Bears in the 149th pick is a gift they did not have to think twice about. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.
They will answer for taking cornerback early while linebacker went begging. For all the activity, linebacker went untouched, which is hard to explain. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
They went 4 of 5 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick49
Rnd2
Will Echoles
Somehow Will Echoles was still sitting there in the 49th overall pick, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick59
Rnd2
Trevor Goosby
They will replay Trevor Goosby at Round 2, Pick 27 for years; that is how good the value is. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick77
Rnd3
A'Mauri Washington
A'Mauri Washington in pick 77 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick80
Rnd3
Kade Pieper
Kade Pieper at the 80th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick90
Rnd3
Anthony Smith
Anthony Smith in pick No. 90 is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick113
Rnd4
Kelley Jones
A curious use of slot 113. Linebacker needed the pick; a cornerback in Kelley Jones did not.
Pick126
Rnd4
Mark Fletcher Jr.
Mark Fletcher Jr. at the Round 4 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick149
Rnd5
Drew Mestemaker
Drew Mestemaker in No. 149 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick151
Rnd5
Ty Benefield
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Ty Benefield in the Round 5 slot, plain and simple. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
Pick206
Rnd6
John Nestor
John Nestor in No. 206 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster logic is harder to follow.
Pick247
Rnd7
Isaiah Sategna III
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick No. 247 is the definition of value, full stop. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
