Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
C+
ValueC-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The jury is out on the 49ers. For now, C+. Nobody else had Aaron Lewis anywhere near the 215th overall pick. The 49ers did, by 82 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Oladapo at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
If Jackson Powers-Johnson and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Jackson Powers-Johnson
In slot 31 they get a cornerstone up front, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick63
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
A clean, defensible pick in Round 2, Pick 31 with a little surplus value in Edgerrin Cooper. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick94
Rnd3
Dominick Puni
They jumped the gun on Dominick Puni, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick98
Rnd3
Javon Foster
This one needs a full-page explanation: Javon Foster in pick 98, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick132
Rnd4
Cam Hart
A straight-up fair deal on Cam Hart at the 132nd pick, value and slot in agreement. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick176
Rnd6
Kitan Oladapo
They let Kitan Oladapo come to them and pounced at No. 176. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick209
Rnd6
Xavier Thomas
They talked themselves into Xavier Thomas at pick No. 209, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick214
Rnd6
J.J. Weaver
They paid a round early for J.J. Weaver in slot 214, more than the board wanted. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick215
Rnd6
Aaron Lewis
Aaron Lewis in No. 215 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick249
Rnd7
Desmond Evans
A wild overpay on Desmond Evans in the Round 7 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
