FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Jets, and a B- to prove it. The Jets torched the value chart for Dominic Zvada, taking him 83 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
The Ponds pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. It is not that Styles is a bad player; it is that the Jets had louder needs to answer first. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
No edge and no loss on Arvell Reese in slot 2; it is a wash and a sensible one. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick27
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Sonny Styles while clear needs at quarterback and edge rusher sat open.
Pick33
Rnd2
CJ Allen
A want over a need in No. 33: CJ Allen adds a linebacker while quarterback and edge rusher keeps waiting.
Pick44
Rnd2
Anthony Hill Jr.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Anthony Hill Jr. in the Round 2 slot leaves quarterback and edge rusher for later.
Pick81
Rnd3
D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds in pick No. 81 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick92
Rnd3
Domonique Orange
Domonique Orange in the 92nd overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick100
Rnd3
Malachi Fields
Somehow Malachi Fields was still sitting there in slot 100, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick130
Rnd4
Jude Bowry
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jude Bowry in the 130th pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick168
Rnd5
Louis Moore
Louis Moore slipping to the Round 5 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick192
Rnd6
Bryce Boettcher
Steal is underselling it; Bryce Boettcher at pick No. 192 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick206
Rnd6
Xavier Nwankpa
A safety of that caliber at No. 206 is the definition of value, full stop. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick218
Rnd7
Bud Clark
Bud Clark in pick 218 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick220
Rnd7
Dominic Zvada
Value said wait; Dominic Zvada in Round 7, Pick 4 says they were not listening. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick242
Rnd7
CJ Donaldson
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for CJ Donaldson. The roster fit checks out.
