Best value of the weekend goes to the Giants for Barton: B. The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Giants watched Lander Barton slide 116 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
The cost of the Smith reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
Job largely done: safety settled and 7 of 9 of the wish list covered.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Travis Hunter
In pick 4 they get a sticky cover corner. A real need, handled.
Pick65
Rnd3
Kamari Ramsey
Steal is underselling it; Kamari Ramsey at No. 65 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick87
Rnd3
Deontae Lawson
A clean, defensible pick in slot 87 with a little surplus value in Deontae Lawson. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick110
Rnd4
Earnest Greene III
They reached a country mile for Earnest Greene III at Round 4, Pick 9, and the board is aghast. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick118
Rnd4
Jake Majors
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the Round 4 slot is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick123
Rnd4
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson in pick No. 123 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick134
Rnd4
Willie Lampkin
Willie Lampkin at the 134th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick153
Rnd5
Kyren Lacy
Somehow Kyren Lacy was still sitting there in the 153rd overall pick, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick162
Rnd5
Donovan Smith
Donovan Smith at slot 162 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick190
Rnd6
Jay Higgins
Jay Higgins at the Round 6 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick195
Rnd6
Addison West
They did well to land Addison West in the 195th pick, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick219
Rnd7
Anthony Belton
This one needs a full-page explanation: Anthony Belton in pick 219, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick245
Rnd7
Lander Barton
You do not let a linebacker like Lander Barton reach the 245th overall pick and blink. They did not. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick256
Rnd7
Terrance Ferguson
Terrance Ferguson in No. 256 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
