Draft Grade — Texans
Overall D
ValueA- NeedB+ TradesF FutureC
The Texans let Neal fall and pounced. Final grade: D.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Texans watched Devin Neal slide 71 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Texans indulged a want in Barron while a need in quarterback stayed open. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Mason Graham
In pick 20 they get a wrecking ball inside at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick21 Rnd1 Will Campbell
In the 21st overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick42 Rnd2 Jack Sawyer
Nothing to complain about; Jack Sawyer went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick54 Rnd2 Isaiah Bond
You do not let a wide receiver like Isaiah Bond reach slot 54 and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick55 Rnd2 Omarion Hampton
Taking Omarion Hampton in the 55th pick is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick70 Rnd3 Malaki Starks
They will replay Malaki Starks at Round 3, Pick 6 for years; that is how good the value is. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick75 Rnd3 Jahdae Barron
A curious use of the Round 3 slot. Quarterback needed the pick; a safety in Jahdae Barron did not.
Pick85 Rnd3 Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren at No. 85 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick106 Rnd4 Dylan Fairchild
Dylan Fairchild in Round 4, Pick 5 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick121 Rnd4 Jay Higgins
They barely believed it either: Jay Higgins still on the board at the 121st pick. The roster fit checks out.
Pick142 Rnd5 Parker Brailsford
A reasonable price with a little left over, Parker Brailsford in slot 142. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick166 Rnd5 Devin Neal
Circle this one: Devin Neal at pick No. 166 is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick235 Rnd7 Barrett Carter
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Barrett Carter in No. 235, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
