Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Patriots spent the 229th pick on Carson Steele, a name most had 53 spots down the list.

That is a tight end worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
