Draft Grade — Vikings

A solid, sensible weekend for the Vikings: B-.

The tape said wait; the Vikings did not. Roman Hemby went at pick 240, a good 42 picks before the board was ready. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Scott. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

The Allen pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher, safety and other spots still on the board. They left with quarterback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
They read the board right and Arvell Reese was the payoff at No. 18. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick49 Rnd2 CJ Allen
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, CJ Allen adds a linebacker and leaves edge rusher, safety and other spots untouched.
Pick82 Rnd3 Connor Lew
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Connor Lew at Round 3, Pick 18 is the proof. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick97 Rnd3 Keionte Scott
They barely believed it either: Keionte Scott still on the board at slot 97. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick162 Rnd5 Drew Allar
Drew Allar in the Round 5 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick195 Rnd6 Barion Brown
This one needs a full-page explanation: Barion Brown in pick No. 195, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick234 Rnd7 Riley Mahlman
No drama and no debate, Riley Mahlman went about where he belonged in pick 234. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick240 Rnd7 Roman Hemby
Roman Hemby at the 240th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
