Grand theft in pick No. 159: the Rams steal Phillips and grade out a D. The Rams lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again.
However the rest shakes out, Phillips at that price is a win they earned. Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The cost of the Etienne reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, safety very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In the 26th pick they get a seam-stretching tight end, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick76
Rnd3
Jack Bech
The board had Jack Bech higher than the 76th overall pick, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick94
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
A cornerback of that caliber at pick 94 is the definition of value, full stop. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick97
Rnd3
Carson Schwesinger
Carson Schwesinger is a better player than slot 97 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick126
Rnd4
Jalen Milroe
You do not let a quarterback like Jalen Milroe reach Round 4, Pick 25 and blink. They did not. The roster fit checks out.
Pick159
Rnd5
Jordan Phillips
They will replay Jordan Phillips at No. 159 for years; that is how good the value is. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick197
Rnd6
Ajani Cornelius
Taking Ajani Cornelius in slot 197 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick201
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in No. 201 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick203
Rnd6
Trevor Etienne
A reach on Trevor Etienne in pick No. 203; the board had better options right there. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick204
Rnd6
Jack Kiser
Jack Kiser in Round 6, Pick 26 lands just on the right side of the ledger. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
