Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Steelers robbed the room for Greenfield. Final grade: B-. When a board-topper like Garret Greenfield slides to the 247th overall pick, you do not overthink it, and the Steelers did not. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Van Pran pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, running back and other spots still on the board.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
In the 20th pick they get a cornerstone up front. More want than need.
Pick51
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat at pick No. 51 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick76
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Sedrick Van Pran at offensive lineman with quarterback, running back and other spots open.
Pick98
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
Nothing to complain about; Khyree Jackson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick142
Rnd5
Tommy Eichenberg
No drama and no debate, Tommy Eichenberg went about where he belonged in the 142nd overall pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick166
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
A slide stopped in slot 166, with Luke McCaffrey worth more than the price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick176
Rnd6
Kitan Oladapo
They barely believed it either: Kitan Oladapo still on the board at Round 6, Pick 1. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick178
Rnd6
Grayson Murphy
No edge and no loss on Grayson Murphy in pick 178; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick215
Rnd6
Tahj Washington
Taking Tahj Washington in slot 215 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick247
Rnd7
Garret Greenfield
Somehow Garret Greenfield was still sitting there in Round 7, Pick 27, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
