The Vikings won the night they stopped Johnson from sliding. Grade: B. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Vikings were there to profit. Tez Johnson, the No. 100 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 4 slot. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The roster is better shaped than it was, with safety chief among the fixes.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
In the Round 1 slot they get a run-stuffing presence up front, outstanding value to boot.
Pick97
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
They let Ozzy Trapilo come to them and pounced at the 97th overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick109
Rnd4
Billy Bowman Jr.
Billy Bowman Jr. at pick No. 109 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick132
Rnd4
Tez Johnson
Tez Johnson at slot 132 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
Pick139
Rnd5
RJ Harvey
RJ Harvey in Round 5, Pick 1 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick187
Rnd6
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues in No. 187 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
