Draft Grade — Saints
Overall
D
ValueB
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB
Gabriel should have been long gone. The Saints pounced, and earned a D. Nobody else had Jackson Slater anywhere near pick 94. The Saints did, by 52 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Put together, it is a D.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The Gabriel pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Jahdae Barron
In the 14th overall pick they get an island corner. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick40
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
Kenneth Grant in the Round 2 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
Pick45
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker in the 45th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick71
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
They paid a round early for Ozzy Trapilo in pick 71, more than the board wanted. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick93
Rnd3
Xavier Watts
You do not let a safety like Xavier Watts reach the Round 3 slot and blink. They did not. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick94
Rnd3
Jackson Slater
Jackson Slater in the 94th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick103
Rnd4
Bradyn Swinson
They will replay Bradyn Swinson at Round 4, Pick 1 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick112
Rnd4
Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins at pick 112 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick120
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
A tidy bit of business in slot 120, where Smael Mondon Jr. graded well above the range. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick131
Rnd4
Terrance Ferguson
Steal is underselling it; Terrance Ferguson at the 131st overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick141
Rnd5
Dorian Strong
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Dorian Strong in pick No. 141, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick143
Rnd5
Tyler Shough
A tidy little value on Tyler Shough in No. 143, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick167
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A reach on Dont'e Thornton Jr. in No. 167; the board had better options right there. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick176
Rnd5
Dillon Gabriel
They robbed the room for Dillon Gabriel here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick178
Rnd6
Chimere Dike
They talked themselves into Chimere Dike at the Round 6 slot, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick179
Rnd6
Vernon Broughton
They paid sticker price for Vernon Broughton in pick 179, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick182
Rnd6
Jarquez Hunter
They took Jarquez Hunter at par in the 182nd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick183
Rnd6
Jason Marshall Jr.
Jason Marshall Jr. at pick No. 183 is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick189
Rnd6
Isaac TeSlaa
A big swing on Isaac TeSlaa at slot 189, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick232
Rnd7
CJ West
Taking CJ West in Round 7, Pick 16 is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
